Working together.
Delivering more.

Since 2016, WABSI has led a collaboration between industry, government, regulators and the research community to strengthen data sharing and access in Western Australia. The aim: to unlock value from the vast environmental data collected each year.
WAMSI joined this journey, helping to strengthen the shared goal of improving access to data to enable smarter decisions.

Key milestones

This collaborative journey achieved several milestones, helping to establish the Index of Biodiversity Surveys for Assessments (IBSA) in 2018, Index of Marine Surveys for Assessments (IMSA) in 2020 and Western Australia’s first whole-of-state biodiversity data platform Dandjoo in 2020.

The collaboration then launched the Shared Analytic Framework for the Environment (SAFE) in 2021 – a framework designed to improve environmental decision-making, data sharing, and risk assessment in Western Australia.

SEAF, operational in 2026, now has several pilot projects in Western Australia.

Guided by senior leaders

For the past few years, the Digital Environmental Impact Assessment Working Group in Western Australia has been driving a data sharing culture and has played a key role in providing strategic advice towards the development of SEAF.

The group comprises senior leaders from Western Australian Government agencies, the Environmental Protection Authority, industry peak bodies and research institutions. The leaders have helped shape how biodiversity information in collected, shared and utilised.
